Helmet Safety Standards: What Skaters Need

A helmet can look spot-on with your setup, but helmet safety standards are what tell you whether it has been tested for the hits your sport can deliver. For a child learning to roll, a commuter skating to work, or a rider sending ramps at the skatepark, that label inside the shell matters far more than colour, graphics or price.

The right helmet is one that suits your discipline, fits securely and is worn every session. Start there, then choose the style and brand that makes you want to keep it on.

Which helmet safety standards apply to your sport?

For roller skating, inline skating, skateboarding and most scooter riding in the UK, look for a helmet marked EN 1078. This European standard covers helmets for pedal cyclists and users of skateboards and roller skates. It assesses areas including shock absorption, how well the retention system holds the helmet in place, the strength of the straps and buckle, and the rider's field of vision.

That makes an EN 1078 helmet a practical starting point for everyday skating, cruising, learning tricks and riding a scooter around the park. It is the standard you will commonly see on skate-style helmets with a rounded hard shell, as well as lighter cycle-inspired designs.

The sport still changes the decision. A relaxed indoor roller session and a session at a concrete skatepark may both call for EN 1078 certification, but the rider at the skatepark may prefer more rear-head coverage, a durable outer shell and a shape that works with repeated use. For aggressive inline skating, skateboarding and stunt scootering, a hard-shell helmet is often the popular choice because it is built for the knocks of daily action-sports use as well as an impact.

Skateparks, ramps and street riding

A certified skate helmet is designed for the type of falls common in action sports: backwards slips, side impacts and unexpected bails. Check that it says EN 1078 on the product label or packaging. Some helmets also carry ASTM F1492, a US standard for skateboarding and roller skating. That can be useful additional reassurance, but UK buyers should still prioritise clear EN 1078 marking for this use.

Do not assume a fashionable cap-style helmet, a low-cost novelty shell or an old bike helmet meets the same test. If the standard is not stated, treat it as unverified protection rather than safety equipment.

Ice skating and hockey are different

For public ice skating, an EN 1078 helmet can be a sensible option for beginners, children and anyone building confidence. Ice is unforgiving, and falls can happen before a skater has learned how to stop safely. A snug skate or cycle-style helmet is usually far better than going without one.

Ice hockey needs hockey-specific protection. Hockey helmets are designed around puck impacts, sticks, boards and collisions, and should meet the certification required for the league, club or governing body you play under. A skateboard helmet is not a substitute for a properly certified hockey helmet and cage or visor where those are required. If you are buying for a junior team, check the club rules before ordering.

For figure skaters and recreational ice skaters, the choice depends on confidence, speed and the session. A helmet is especially worthwhile during early lessons, busy public sessions and recovery after a fall. It may be less common among experienced figure skaters, but the risk does not disappear simply because a helmet is not part of the usual look.

Why a bike or motorcycle helmet is not always the answer

A bicycle helmet carrying EN 1078 may meet the same baseline standard as many skating helmets, so it can be suitable for low-risk skating if it fits correctly. The shape, ventilation and coverage may not be ideal for skatepark riding, though. A skate helmet tends to sit differently and can better suit the way action-sports riders move and fall.

Motorcycle helmets are tested to another standard entirely, such as ECE 22.06. They are made for much higher-speed road impacts and are heavier, hotter and less practical for skating or scooters. More weight does not automatically mean more suitable protection. Buy for the activity you actually do.

How to read helmet labels before you buy

A standards label should be durable and easy to find inside the helmet. Alongside EN 1078 or another relevant standard, you may see the manufacturer, model, size range, production information and care instructions. Many helmets sold in the UK will also carry conformity marking relevant to the market. That marking is not the same as a sport-specific impact standard, so always look for the actual standard number as well.

When comparing helmets, check three things: the intended sport, the stated certification and the size range. Product names can be vague. A helmet called a “rider helmet” may be brilliant, but the specification is what confirms its tested use.

For parents buying a first helmet, avoid sizing up too far in the hope it will last several years. A loose helmet cannot do its job properly. A good adjustable fit system can provide room for growth, but only within the maker's stated size range.

Fit is part of helmet safety standards in real life

Testing only works as intended when the helmet stays in position. Put it on level, so the front edge sits just above the eyebrows rather than tipped back on the crown. Tighten the fit dial, if fitted, until it feels secure without pressure points. Then adjust the side straps into a neat V around each ear and fasten the chin strap.

You should be able to fit roughly one or two fingers beneath the chin strap, not a whole hand. Ask the rider to shake their head, look down and gently try to roll the helmet forwards and backwards. It should move with the skin on their forehead, not slide freely over it.

Hair can affect fit. A low ponytail, thick braids or a beanie underneath may push a helmet out of position. Try the helmet in the way it will genuinely be worn. For children, do the buckle adjustment yourself at first and check it again before each session - straps can loosen as they learn to take the helmet on and off.

When should you replace a helmet?

Helmets are designed to manage impact by compressing or spreading force through the shell and protective liner. After a significant impact, replace it, even if it looks fine from the outside. Damage to the energy-absorbing liner is not always visible.

Replace the helmet if you find cracks, dents, a loose shell, damaged straps, a broken buckle or compressed padding that no longer gives a secure fit. Heat and age also take their toll. Do not leave a helmet on a car parcel shelf, near a radiator or in direct sun for long periods, and keep solvents, stickers with aggressive adhesives and paint away from the shell unless the manufacturer says they are safe.

Hand-me-down helmets need a careful check. If you cannot confirm their history, certification and condition, buying a new one is the safer call. That is particularly true for second-hand helmets from busy skateparks, hockey clubs or scooter sessions where a hard impact may not have been mentioned.

Build protection around the way you ride

A helmet protects one critical area, not every likely point of contact. Beginner skaters often gain confidence faster with wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads alongside a correctly fitted helmet. Skateboarders and scooter riders learning drop-ins, ramps or tricks should consider a full pad set as part of their normal kit, not something reserved for the first day.

For hockey, use the protection designed for hockey. For skateparks, choose a certified skate helmet that fits your head shape and works with your pads. For every skill level, the best setup is the one you will wear consistently, inspect regularly and replace after a serious hit.
