How to Clean Skateboard Bearings Properly

A board that suddenly feels slow, rough or oddly noisy does not always need new wheels. Often, the problem is hidden inside the hubs. Knowing how to clean skateboard bearings can bring back a faster, smoother roll, especially after wet sessions, dusty skateparks or a few trips through gritty pavement.

Bearings are small, but they take plenty of punishment. Dirt works its way past the shields, moisture starts corrosion, and old lubricant turns into a sticky paste that catches more debris. Clean them properly and your board will roll better. Clean the wrong way, however, and you can wash out the lubricant, bend a shield or shorten their life.

When skateboard bearings need cleaning

Spin each wheel while the board is upside down. A healthy bearing should rotate freely and quietly, without catching, crunching or wobbling. It does not need to spin for minutes in the air - a long free spin is not the only measure of a good bearing - but it should feel smooth under load.

Cleaning makes sense when bearings sound gritty, turn slowly, have been exposed to rain or sand, or feel noticeably different from one wheel to another. If a bearing is heavily rusted, cracked, loose in the wheel or still rough after cleaning, replacement is the better call. A fresh set is often safer and more reliable than trying to rescue worn-out parts.

There is a trade-off here. Frequent cleaning is useful for riders who skate wet streets, trails or dusty DIY spots. For a dry park setup that still rolls smoothly, opening and washing bearings too often can create unnecessary wear. Check them regularly, then clean them when they need it.

What you need to clean skateboard bearings

Set up on a clean table or tray where small parts cannot roll away. You will need a skate tool or socket wrench, a bearing press or the lorry axle, a bearing cleaning bottle or small sealable jar, bearing cleaner or a suitable solvent, a lint-free cloth, and skateboard bearing lubricant.

Choose a cleaner designed for bearings where possible. Isopropyl alcohol can work for light grime, while a dedicated bearing cleaner is a practical choice for stubborn dirt. Avoid water, even if the bearings look muddy. Water leaves moisture behind and can start rust quickly. Also avoid thick household oils and products intended mainly as water displacers. They may make a bearing feel better for a day, but they do not provide the light, lasting lubrication skateboard bearings need.

Wear gloves if you are using solvent and work somewhere well ventilated, away from flames, heaters and children. Solvents are useful workshop products, not something to use casually on the kitchen floor.

How to clean skateboard bearings step by step

Remove the wheels and bearings

Use your skate tool to remove the axle nuts, then lift off the wheels. Keep washers and nuts together so they go back in the same order. Most skateboard wheels contain two bearings and a spacer between them.

To remove a bearing, place the wheel gently onto the end of the lorry axle so the axle catches just inside the bearing. Tilt the wheel slightly and lever it away with controlled pressure. Do not yank it. Repeat for the second bearing, then set the spacer aside. A proper bearing puller makes this job easier, but the lorry axle method works well when done carefully.

Inspect every bearing as it comes out. Look for brown rust, dented shields, missing shield clips and damaged cages. If balls are visible through a broken shield, do not keep skating that bearing just because it still turns. It can fail without much warning.

Remove shields only if they are removable

Many skateboard bearings have rubber or metal shields. Rubber shields are often removable, while some metal shields are crimped in place and should be left alone. Check the edge of the shield for a small retaining clip before trying to lift it.

If the shield is removable, use a pin or the tip of a craft knife to carefully ease out the retaining clip. Lift the shield without bending it, then place the clip and shield somewhere safe. Repeat on the other side if both shields are removable.

Do not force sealed bearings open. A bent metal shield can rub against the balls and make the bearing worse than it was before. If you cannot remove the shields cleanly, wash the outside, add a small amount of lubricant around the shield edge and consider replacing the bearings if they remain rough.

Wash away the old dirt and lubricant

Put the bearings into your cleaning bottle or jar, add enough cleaner to cover them, and close the lid securely. Agitate the container for around 30 seconds, then leave the bearings to soak for several minutes. Very dirty bearings may need a second wash with fresh cleaner.

Do not leave bearings soaking for hours. The aim is to dissolve old lubricant and lift grit, not to expose every component to solvent longer than necessary. After the first wash, check the cleaner. If it has turned dark and cloudy, discard it responsibly according to the product instructions and repeat with clean fluid.

For bearings with fixed shields, avoid fully soaking them unless the cleaner manufacturer says it is suitable. The solvent may not flush out evenly, and trapped fluid can be difficult to dry. In that case, use a small amount of cleaner on a cloth or brush around the shield and spin the bearing by hand.

Dry them completely

This is the step riders most often rush. Tip the bearings onto a lint-free cloth and let the solvent drain out. Spin each bearing lightly, then leave them to air dry fully before lubricating. A blast of compressed air can speed things up, but keep the pressure gentle and hold the bearing securely. High pressure can force debris deeper inside or spin an unlubricated bearing far faster than it should.

Never use a radiator, hairdryer on high heat or an oven. Excess heat can damage shields and cages. If you have used isopropyl alcohol or a fast-evaporating cleaner, drying may only take a few minutes. If there is any doubt, give them longer.

Lubricate, reassemble and test

Once dry, add two or three drops of skateboard bearing lubricant to each bearing. More is not better. Too much oil attracts dirt and can leak into the wheel. Rotate the bearing slowly between your fingers so the lubricant spreads across the balls and raceways.

Refit the shields and retaining clips if you removed them. Press the bearings back into each wheel evenly, using a bearing press or the lorry axle. Insert the spacer between the two bearings, then fit the second bearing. The spacer should sit squarely rather than rattle around.

Refit each wheel with its washers, then tighten the axle nut until there is no side-to-side play. Back it off slightly if the wheel is pinched and does not spin freely. Give every wheel a spin, stand on the board and roll a short distance before heading out.

Common bearing-cleaning mistakes to avoid

The biggest mistake is washing bearings with water and assuming they will dry naturally. They may look fine at first, then develop rust inside where you cannot see it. Another is riding immediately after cleaning without lubricant. Solvent strips old oil, leaving metal parts exposed to friction.

Avoid mixing cleaners, using petrol, or applying grease intended for heavy machinery. Thick grease can be appropriate for some specialist applications, but it makes most skateboard bearings feel sluggish. Likewise, do not judge a bearing solely by its ABEC rating. Build quality, shields, lubrication, fit and the conditions you skate in matter far more to day-to-day performance.

Keep bearings cleaner for longer

The simplest protection is avoiding puddles and wet paths where possible. Wipe down wheels and lorries after a damp session, particularly if you have travelled through grit or salt-treated streets. Keep your board indoors rather than leaving it in a shed, car boot or porch where condensation can build up.

If you skate regularly, inspect the wheels and bearings every few weeks. Street skaters and commuters may need to clean them more often than riders who stick to dry indoor ramps. Carrying a skate tool also means you can deal with a loose axle nut or rough wheel before it turns into a bigger problem.
